CNY holiday #1: 48 hours of Singapore

For the past 3 weeks I have thoroughly enjoyed my overseas holiday and spending Chinese New Year in Malaysia/Singapore. The first 48 hours (spread over 3 days) was spent in Singapore, followed by 6 days in KL, 7 in Penang and a final 7 in Singapore.

Singapore has always been a very relaxing place for me. I love staying with relatives near Holland Village. This time (with my fitbit pedometer) I was able to calculate that the walking distance is less than 1KM. This trip marks my first experience of the new Circle Line MRT, made incredibly convenient by the Holland Village MRT station.

Saturday 27/01 – arrived at night after a uneventful Qantas flight. I will reserve judgment on flying Qantas in a separate post! Let’s just say when you have flown Singapore Air for the last decade, there are things I took for granted… Dinner was at the Holland Village food court where I had my first local dish – mee pok. That’s flat egg noodles with fish balls, with soup separate.

Sunday 28/01 – joined my host aunt/uncle in attending St John’s St Margaret’s church service, followed by shouting them to Japanese banquet at Ikoi. Dinner was with family, this time with my dad’s cousin and his family at a local restaurant in East Coast. We reclined for dessert & coffee at the Singapore Swimming Club afterwards.

Monday 29/01 – with our flights at 2pm/3pm (mine to KL an hour before my dad’s to Penang), we were picked up and had lunch at the Staff Canteen food court located in the basement of Changi Airport Terminal 1. If you haven’t seen this hidden gem, try it out since  if offers local cuisine at local $3-$4 rates! After lunch, we briefly met up with family friends who were having a fine dining experience upstairs before their KL flight.
