Writing this post is a challenge to me unlike one I’ve attempted thus far. To briefly explain, I will be dissecting the worship song He Knows My Name, and fleshing it out more fully, line by line. The closest equivalent would be my previous post on The Lord’s Prayer. It is very much an exercise and opportunity for me to practice, not just Connecting to the Head, but also transcribing the whole experience. I just know God wants me to do this, and that through this – He will be glorified, and some reader out there will also be blessed.
I have a Maker
God, you are the Creator. It starts first and foremost with You, oh Lord because You are the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. You teach me to seek You first, and the Kingdom will be given unto us (Matthew 6:33).
He formed my heart
You make me in Your image, with our own free will. 1 John 4:8 teaches that “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Therefore, I will love you with all my heart, my mind, my body and soul. My heart rejoices for You are Good.
Before even time began
God, You were there at the beginning of creation – eternal and everlasting. You are timeless and our human understanding of what time means to You is limited by our minds. You are our God for ALL times – the good and the bad. Help me to bless You and be thankful, even in times of sickness and poor spirit.
My life was in His hands
Lord, you know everything. The path that I am to follow is a story unfolding in my eyes, yet has been written in the Book of Life. You have called me and set me apart, to be Holy and righteous. May I always find shelter and comfort in Your hands, and peace from Your Word.
He knows my name
God You know that I belong to You. My identity is in You, following You wholly and in experiencing the fullness of You, Christ in my life. As a believer, I am Your child, seeking after You, to know You more and more, just as You know me completely.
He knows my every thought
God, I pray that my Will unites with Your Will. That the plans I seek are in alignment with the plans You have ordained for me. Help me to rest in You, and abide in You. Lord, as I stand here, be still and know that You are Lord, help me to hear Your voice. May Your commands be imprinted on my heart, that I may obey and follow You, wherever You call me.
He sees each tear that falls
Lord, You know the trials of our life. You know suffering and pain, because You bore it all for me on the cross. Lord, You know that it is through suffering and perseverance that I build character, patience, and conviction. God, You showed me the way in humility and servanthood; that the least will be honoured above others. The meek shall inherit the earth. Lord may my tears not be of sorrow and pain, as a manifestation of what is felt deep within, but instead be tears of joy. Whilst there is a time for mourning and sorrow, if I focus on You, the inevitable outcome is joy and restoration of my soul.
And He hears me when I call
Lord, You long for me to call out and seek You. Even when I turn away from You, or my sinful nature creates separation from You, You are always there ready to respond to the first moment when I repent and turn my eyes back to You. Jesus, may I not call out Your name in vain, for You also teach that not everyone who calls You Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 7:21). Therefore, help me to be sincere in seeking You first, humbly and with a heart of joy.
I have a Father
God, You are our Father in Heaven. I thank you for the relationship You enable me to have with You as Father and I as child of God. As it says clearly in 2 Corinthians 6:18, you will be a father to me, and I shall be a son to You. Help us to know Jesus, as The Son, so we can also know You, The Father.
He calls me His own
Your Word states “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12-13). Lord I thank You for bestowing that right on me as a believer.
He’ll never leave me
Jesus, for all those times when I think I’m journeying through life without You, and I see those single set of footprints in the sand, it truly humbles me to realise that in fact You are the one carrying me and seeing me through to the light at the end of the tunnel.
No matter where I go
Lord, Your love is truly amazing. So wide, so deep, so high, so all-encompassing that no matter how far I think I’ve deviated from Your side, You are always, always there to rescue me, no matter how far I fall from grace. Lord, Your grace is more than enough for me.
You know my name
You know my every thought
You see each tear that falls
And You hear me when I call

He Knows My Name, written and composed by Tommy Walker. As shared in this interview, the song was motivated by the desire to communicate that Christians are individuals belonging to a community where we are each destined for a God-given purpose.
