Deuteronomy 5:32 NIV
This is the third of 20 memory verses that I will use as a guide/focal point to writing these articles. The “Table of Contents” is available here in the series introductory article.
The context for this verse is the same as Deuteronomy 5:16a where the Ten Commandments were laid down. The verse is therefore a good wrapper to the section; to keep and uphold the law is a path to righteousness. Distractions can come in many forms and cause us to stray from the narrow path.
The writings of Deuteronomy are part of the Torah/Jewish law. The role of Deuteronomy helps to bridge the biblical origins of the Israelites and the events of the Exodus, helping to reiterate the 40 years in the wilderness and in particular, the laying down of the Mosaic law. The key verse here that is being studied thus is an appropriate summation of God’s desire for Israel to remain faithful to His laws. It re-emphasises the three-fold foundation and relational nature between God, Israel and His covenant with them.
The full appreciation of Deuteronomy 5:32 is observed when we first acknowledge His Lordship. The second aspect is not just to simply acknowledge His Lordship, but to meaningfully apply that to our daily lives by knowing and then upholding His law. In doing so, not only are we able to keep to a straight and narrow path, but also to celebrate a life walking in His presence.
