lifeline-whiteout

Having recently played this game through to completion, I decided that in the absence of a proper written walk-through, I would create one here. Warning: Spoiler Alerts! The game Lifeline: Whiteout is developed by 3 Minute and available on iTunes and Google Play. This walk-through focuses on the sixth chapter of the game titled “Morning – Day 2”.  Click here to view the table of contents/list of chapters.

Main Story

Good morning! Are you there?
I… I barely made it through the night.

At first, it was warm and cozy, but then, a few hours later… The fire suddenly went out!

I don’t know what happened. It didn’t run out of fuel. Maybe it was the wind blowing in?

Anyway, when I work up, my fingers were already numb, and my body started to shake.
But then, a miracle happened!
That dog, the one I fed and released from the kennel, he came back here and laid beside me!
He kept me warm all night – didn’t you, buddy? I owe you my life.
He even letting me pet him. He’s really soft.
Actually, now t hat I’m looking at him, he’s got some kind of collar… Looks military.

Oh yeah! And to make matters worse… You remember that locked door?

Well, it was OPEN this morning.
Someone was in there the whole night, listening to us!
Just the thought of someone watching me sleep a few steps away from my bed makes my skin crawl.
It was a terrible night!
And if it wasn’t for this god, it would’ve been my last.
I’m lucky to be alive!

Decision A:
A1: His collar could be a clue.
A2: Tell me more about the open door.

Decision A1: His collar could be a clue

Good thinking! It could be a clue to my location, or at least to whoever owns this guy.
I don’t know why I didn’t look earlier. I guess I’m still waking up…

All right, hold still boy.
There we go. I won’t hurt ya. Just let me take a peek…
Another ALT logo! It seems every road is leading me in the same direction…

The rest looks like an ID number: UK32-187

Not exactly a name, is it buddy?
I think this big guy deserves a a better one…

Hmmm, let me think…
I’ll call him Blue, because of those piercing eyes…
They’re sky blue, brimming with intelligence.

Decision B:
B1: Do you know why he came back?
B2: Why didn’t he bark at the visitor?

Decision B1: Do you know why he came back?

I guess he was just returning the favour.

I saved him from starvation. He saved me from freezing.
It’s like they say – dogs are man’s best friend! It’s in their DNA, I guess.

But there is one thing that bothers me…

[Decision B2: Why didn’t he bark at the visitor? joins the story-line here]

It’s strange Blue didn’t bark… I mean, whoever was in that room strolled right past us.
Blue was barking like crazy when I approached the station…
I don’t know. Should I be worried?

Decision C:
C1: Was it someone he knew? His owner?
C2: Maybe you slept through his barking?

Decision C1: Was it someone he knew? His owner?

[Decision C2: Maybe you slept through his barking? joins the story-line here]

It’s possible that Blue knew our silent guest.

That would explain his silence.
But that doesn’t make it any less creepy.

I don’t know. Should I search for this mystery roommate?

Decision D:
D1: Yes. Make sure they’re gone.
D2: Check the room first.

Decision D1: Yes. Make sure they’re gone

[Decision E3: They could be nearby joins the story-line here]

You’re right. I should check it out.
I need to be stealthy, so I’ll turn my comm off.
I’ll be back in ten!
Adams out.

[Adams is busy]

I scouted the perimeter.
our mysterious roommate has left the station.
I found his tracks, going northeast, towards some mountains.
I found something else interesting as well…

These boot prints are identical to mine.

They’re the same size, too.

Decision  E:
E1: You were probably sleepwalking.
E2: Were you here before you got amnesia?

Decision E1: You were probably sleepwalking

I seriously doubt that. I mean, wouldn’t I have frozen to death?
One way or another, those tracks are leading towards that mountain range…

[Decision E2: Were you here before you got amnesia? joins the story-line here]

And it’s high time t hat I moved on.
And I think this dog is coming along! He really seems to like me!
C’mon Blue! Let’s go buddy.
Before we go, there’s still one thing bothering me…
The second container, and that weird beeping from last night…
Do you think it’s important?
Should I go back and take a look?

Decision F:
F1: There’s no time. Forget it.
F2: Good idea

Decision F1: There’s no time. Forget it

[END OF CHAPTER 6 / START OF CHAPTER 7]

That relay station I saw yesterday was east. I might find a working computer there. On the other hand, the tracks from my mysterious roommate lead to the mountains…

Alternate Routes

Decision A2: Tell me more about the open door

It’s open, but only slightly.
But there’s no doubt. Someone was in there…
It wasn’t just a bad dream.
Do you think it’s safe to go in t here?

Decision G:
B3: Look first. Make sure no one’s there.
B4: Yes. Go ahead. [Refer to Decision D2 below]

Decision B3: Look first. Make sure no one’s there

Good. There’s no one inside.
The room itself is like some kind of storage unit.
I can see some boxes…
But the door mechanism is blocked. I guess my stalker managed to wiggle through this narrow opening.
I might just be able to force the door open.

Decision H:
C3: Break down the door. [Refer to Decision D2 below]
C4: Don’t! Be careful.

Decision C2: Maybe you slept through his barking?

I was asleep – not dead!
I’m sure I’d hear Blue.
However…

[Refer to Main Story-line Decision C1 above]

Decision C4: Don’t! Be careful!

Don’t worry. I’ll just take a quick look.

I’ll be careful.

[Refer to Decision D2 above]

Decision D2: Check the room first

Multiple decision points join the story-line here:

  • Decision B4: Yes. Go ahead
  • Decision C4: Don’t Be careful!

The mechanism is blocked, but I think i can force me way in.
Here we go…
One…
Two…
THREE!

[Decision C3: Break down the door joins the story-line here]

Ow!
Sorry, I bumped my head.
That was easier than I thought.
I flew right through the door…
I scattered some boxes around the room.

But I’m not the only one who made this mess, because…
This room looks ransacked.
Someone searched here thoroughly…
There ‘s some broken scientific equipment too… What looks like… a seismograph? And a smashed computer!

Geez. Whoever did this was… really angry.

I hope my stalker isn’t somewhere watching me…

Decision I:
E3: They could be nearby. [Refer to Main Story-line Decision D1 above]
E4: No way, they’re long gone. Check the boxes.

Decision E2: Were you here before you got amnesia?

I don’t think they’re mine.
They’re leading away from the station and they’re not coming back.
It couldn’t have been me, How would I have ended up at the lake?
One way or another, those tracks are leading towards that mountain range…

[Refer to Main Story-line Decision E1 above]

Decision E4: No way, they’re long gone. Check the boxes

Good idea! My mysterious roommate might have left something useful…
I’ll let you know when, and if, I find something.

[Adams is busy]

[Decision F2: Were you here before you got amnesia? joins the story-line here]

This is so great – I don’t know where to start!

This place is like a survivalist’s dream house!
You won’t believe this!
I think my bad luck is finally changing!

I found an empty backpack and a pair of shoe shoes.
Also, remember those boxes?
I found more beef stew cans in them!
I’ll stuff as many as I can into this backpack.

But I’ll save one for Blue. He’s gotta be hungry…
Come on , buddy! Munch time!
That’s right, boy! Fill up! It’ll probably be a while before our next meal.

Man, he loves this stuff.
I think I’ll have some too. Back in a few!

[Adams is busy]

Now that our bellies are full, it’s time to think about pressing on.
Not much sense hanging around here.

Commentary & Analysis

A possible pattern emerges in the alternating style and complexity of chapters. In this latest Chapter 7 which, in the story marks the beginning of the second day, the story-line is much more simplified, particularly after the complex series of decisions involved in Chapter 6. One of the big changes from recent chapters is that there is only one possible outcome – survival. The question and challenge for this rather uneventful chapter is thus how quickly one progresses through the set of seven possible decisions. One route is shown in the process flowchart as taking a minimum of three decisions. Another 2 routes take 4 steps, whereas the bulk (47%) take 6 decisions.
